Make a Dovetailed Box, with hand tools only

This 3 day course is less about the lovely dovetailed box you will make and more about the skills and techniques you will take away with you.

Creative Environment

This course is aimed at the Intermediate and you will get more from it having first completed the Introduction Day, although beginners are accepted so please email Bill.

What will you learn? Accurate markig out, cutting dovetails and trying both Western and Japanese saws, creating grooves with plough plane and other tools, cutting in hinges and block planing accurate crisp chamfers and bevels.

Lots of tool talk, advice on future purchases and the opportunity to try various tools.

The 3 day box making is also completely hand tool focused and the only noise part from the radio will be the sound of chisels and saws on wood.

Email Bill

Please email Bill if you have any questions about this course. He is happy to hear from you.

Box Making

This course is less about the lovely hardwood dovetailed box you will make and more about the skills you will learn and the new tools you will use. The three days are totally hand tool focused.

Accurate markig out, cutting dovetails and trying both Western and Japanese saws, creating grooves with plough plane and other tools, cutting in hinges and block planing accurate crisp chamfers and bevels.

Lots of tool talk, advice on future purchases and the opportunity to try various tools.

Cutting Dovetails

You will learn to cut dovetail joints and/or improve your dovetailing work. The focus is on clean accurate work at your well equipped and organised workspace.

You will have ideally attended the Introduction to Woodworking day or have some woodwork experience but beginners are accepted. You are wanting to immerse yourself in traditional hand tool woodworking, to learn or improve your dovetailing technique.

Creating Grooves Using Hand Tools

Cutting through and stopped grooves by hand is a useful and rewarding process. Accurate marking out, use of plough planes, router planes, chisels to achieve your goals.

Finishing Touches

Learning to fit hinges accurately is a key skill of the cabinetmaker and box maker. These finishing touches really lift your box to a useable finished object.

Creative Process

Enjoying the creative process is what it is all about. Developing your eye for detail, dexterity, muscle memory, tool knowledge and technique.
