This is a group course where we will cover the basics of woodwork and you will cut a wood joint. This is an opportunity to try new tools and pick up some useful tips.
Having completed the Introduction Day or as an intermediate woodworker there are courses to challenge you further. Bill runs a number of courses to help you develop your skills and knowledge, from the 2 day Joint Skills Course to the 5 day Make a Traditional Tool Chest.
For example, the Joint Skills Course, this is a 2 day course where you can develop your skills further.
You will make a practice frame with four different joints, however it is more about the learning than the frame.
Look out for new courses like the 2 day 'Three Tenons' or 'Dovetail Devotion', as my real passion is traditional hand tool woodworking.
Bill offers Private tuition or bespoke training programmes to cover specific subjects/skills. Please email for details. Do you have a project you have always wanted to do, but need support, access to equipment and someone who can source the materials?
Bill has supported students making workbenches, bookcases and many other items.
The Mortise and Tenon joint is a fundamental joint used in framing and furniture making. Many of the skills you use are transferable across all woodworking.
On this two day course, we will discuss different types of M&T joints, process and tool selection. You will then cut three different types and learn from each one as you move forward.
You will have ideally attended the Introduction to Woodworking day or have some woodwork experience. You are wanting to immerse yourself in traditional hand tool woodworking, to learn or improve your dovetailing technique.
The Dovetail Joint is closely linked with the development of the role of specialist cabinet maker in England, in the mid 1600s. Examples of dovetails and variants have however been found in use much earlier, including in Ancient Egypt.
This two day course is an opportunity to break down the process, look at tool options, nuance of process, develop dexterity and to hone your skills. You will then make a dovetail alignment board to take away and use in your own workshop.

From the Introductory day for beginners to a more advanced woodwork course we can arrange tuition to suit your level. This includes looking at timber types, basic tools their maintenance and use. This then leads on to construction methods and joints, which develops knowledge and hand-skills.
Tool knowledge and selection is an enjoyable area to explore. What do all the different planes do? What is the best starter tool kit? For a particular part of a project is there a tool that will do a certain job more easily? Tool maintenance and sharpening is also an important subject and a basic skill that many woodworkers find difficult, which then impacts their work and enjoyment.
Gaining confidence and having that sense of achievement is invaluable. Making something that you can take away or gaining a skill that will enable you to go home and make something should not be underestimated in this 'buy and dispose of it' society. Once you have that skill, it cannot be taken away and it opens up many other opportunities for you. Of course, that first cup of tea sat in the chair you have made is very satisfying.
